José Tomás Boves (1782-1814), born in
Oviedo, in
Asturias,
Spain, known for his cruelties during the wars of independence in
Venezuela.
Renowned smuggler and local merchant, settling down in the
Llanos in the
Captaincy General of Venezuela.
Head of the llanos during
revolutionary wars, in 1814 after successive attacks with a powerful cavalry army of
llaneros, he defeated the republicans on La Puerta and forced them to flee to the east of the country, ending the
Venezuelan Second Republic. He died at the battle of Urica.
